Drawing eyes have never been my strong point, come to think of ot neither are noses or mouths!!! so i thought i would try to draw various examples of eyes to pratice a little and hope to get better.

i wanted some really beautiful eyes to copy so i did some searching and found the amazingly talented Ileana-S, she has a section of half series and minimal portraits that are astounding so i tried to copy a few! hopefully one day i might be half as good as her!!!

if you haven't seen her art already you should really check out her page, its amazing! :)

:) any criticisms would be greatly appreciated :)

This is the best tutorial I can find for the hair you are doing at the moment, just to give you an idea of what I mean by building up layers, just concentrate on the first part of this tutorial for now. [link]

Like any part of drawing, practice makes perfect and hair can differ so much that there are different approaches for each type.

You've really done a lovely job on these Lizzi, even the shading around the eyes is much cleaner and smoother. It's always good to do practices like this as long as you always remember to look closely at the reference you are drawing or you will fall into the trap of drawing what your brain tells you an eye should look like rather than what is in front of you.
If you can start putting this much effort into your next few drawings you'll be producing some impressive work you can be proud of.

Gary.

thank you so much!!! i will continue to do pratices like this i want to find some good nose and mouth references if you have any suggestions? they really help me to draw eyes on full feature drawings but if i draw in A4 like i always do then its hard to get the same level of detail do you think i should start drawing in A3? also have you got any suggestions about hair i'm drawing a potrait at the moment with only a small section of hair and i need to finish it tonight it looks awful at present :(

You should still be able a fair amount of detail with an A4 portrait, the main thing is to keep your pencils as sharp as possible with a very fine point. I did once ask what pencils you use but it would also help to know what grades you are using. As for A3 or A4, that's a choice you really have to make yourself based on what you are drawing. A3 can be easier in some respects but you also have to remember you'll have far more area to cover and more work. My last drawing "With The Sandman" is only A4 and still has a lot of fine detail.

With the hair, it's hard for me to give advice without knowing the type, long, short, curly, straight, blonde, dark. Try to give me as much detail when asking for tips or tutorials, that way I can hopefully find something that will be useful.

Like I keep telling you, don't push yourself too hard or expect too much, if you just make one small improvement on one aspect of each drawing, it's still progress, pushing too hard will make drawing hard work instead of fun.

oh ok i might experiment with A3 but its nice to not have any excuse for poor detail stops me from becoming complacent!is grades B, 2B etc because i always use a variety so 6B for dark areas and 2B for detail normally.

it a photo of Derren Brown i'll put the link at the bottom its so long!!!its quite simple hair in the respect that theres not much of it in the picture it just looks really rubbish! :(

These are all soft grades, it would help to have at least 2H, H and HB when we get on to shading and layering.

Well Derren's hair is pretty dark, the main thing to remember with hair or fur is to always keep your pencil strokes going in the direction of the hair. For this I would suggest downward strokes with a fairly sharp 2B using varying lengths of stroke, don't press hard, just build up overlapping layers, then after a couple of layers, shape your kneadable eraser to the size of the slightly lighter areas and dab a little of the graphite off, then layer again over it all and get it as dark as you need to, the areas you dabbed should stay a shade lighter. Keep your pencil sharpened as often as you need to keep the lines thin.
